Making possible 3D foot scanning technology from any smartphone
Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) has developed a cutting-edge app which allows to capture the 3D shape of the foot with only three pictures taken from any smartphone, making possible to obtain the dimensions of the foot at any place. This technology overcomes the barriers for the massive spreading of the digitisation of feet and its use in e-Commerce for size selection and virtual try-on of footwear as well as for new online business models as footwear mass customization.
The IBV, appointed by the CEN to lead the project on the anthropometry and strength of the European child population
The Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) was awarded the tender by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) to analyze the demands of the experts from the different Technical Committees for Standardization linked to various child sectors, as well as the information on the anthropometry and strength of the child population available in Europe, and the quality of such information.
Nanotechnology improves the anti-slip properties of professional footwear
The science of nanomaterials has opened the door to new solutions, given that nanostructured surfaces have been shown to have specific properties as far as wear, lubrication and friction are concerned. These surfaces can be modulated depending on the nanoparticles that are used in their production, and which may include, for example, hydrophobic or lipophobic characteristics. The NANOFRICTION project combines the use of nanomaterials with biomechanically designed soles in order to improve the friction of the footwear and to reduce the risk of falls in industrial environments.
InstantShoe. Footwear customisation based on "shape memory" materials
Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) has collaborated with “Calzamedi” -a company in Alicante specialized in therapeutic footwear- to create "InstantShoe", an innovative service for women’s footwear customisation at retail shops. The process consists of the in-store registration of the 3D geometry of the customer’s foot using a low-cost scanner developed by the IBV. Based on the dimensions of the foot, a specific fitting device customises the footwear manufactured using a patented upper material with “shape memory” properties. These properties allow the shoes to return to their original shape when heated, should the client decide not to purchase them in the end..
